What are the benefits of a castration and when should it be performed?
Stallions require separate housing & pastures to avoid unwanted breeding and aggressive behavior towards other horses. Castration allows the horse to share pastures with other horses. A stallion may be castrated as early as 4 months if both testicles have dropped. Recovery & healing is more difficult in older horses therefore more castrations are done by one year of age. Aggression and breeding behavior may continue after castrating in older stallions, so again castrating by one year of age will avoid these behavior problems. Older castrations may be done but it depends on the age & health of the horse.
