What are the benefits for women in marriage?
There are an abundant amount of tax and other financial benefits to being married vs. just having a domestic partner in the U.S. I’m not sure what it’s like in other countries, but marriage is largely a state thing here. Many people also have religious reasons for getting married — some believe that sex should be saved until after marriage, others believe it’s a sin to live with someone you aren’t married to. For many others, marriage is about commitment to one another. If you love someone and want to spend your life with them, there is no better way to make that commitment known than to get married. Do I believe too many couples get married for the wrong reasons? Absolutely. But I also firmly believe there is a big difference between living with a relative/friend, living with a boyfriend, and being married. All of it is about choice — if you’re happy single, then that’s great! But nobody should knock anyone else’s decision regarding marriage/non-marriage.
