What are the benefits/disadvantages of being a foreign exchange student?

A friend of mine was a foreign exchange student to Germany. And next year I was planning on visiting Germany so that I can learn the language better. My mom and my friend talked and she told my mom that I would need to stay in Germany for at least a year, if I wanted to learn something. Except instead of being a foreign exchange student, I am actually going to move to Germany, and live there for about a year, and go to a public school. And it would be much cheaper too, since I’ll be staying with people I know, and not a host family. The advantages would be getting a hands-on experience with the language and its culture. And your accent would be more accurate also. I would say the disadvantages would be not knowing that much when you first arrive. And as the other person mentioned, perhaps racism. Of course the best time period to stay would be during the school year.
