What are the beginning and ending dates of the four seasons?
The seasons are not governed by dates, but by the orientation of the Earth’s axis relative to the Sun. At the instant the Earth’s axis is perpendicular to a line from the center of the Sun to the center of the Earth (twice each orbit or year) we have what we call an equinox which marks the change from Winter to Spring or Summer to Autumn. The day nearest this event has almost equal hours of “day” and “night” (equi – nox). (About June 22 and December 22.) The instant the Earth’s axis is in plane with the line from the center of the Sun to the center of the Earth (twice each orbit or year) is the solstice which marks the division of Autumn and Winter or Spring and Summer. (About March 21 and September 23.
