The ball must cross inside the antennas. There are front row players and back row players. They each have various rules that covers how they can hit the ball. The ball can not be caught or thrown. There are various rules that really depend on what level you are playing. One of the above answers said that you can not kick the ball. That is true only in US high schools and junior high schools. You can kick the ball on purpose in every other rule set. There is also a player that wears a different colored shirt called the Libero. The Libero also has their own set of rules.
