What are the basic principles of web design?

I don’t know if this question is asking from a technical perspective or an aesthetic one, but this answer is regarding the latter. People go to web resources expecting to be able to find what they’re looking for with little effort. Title, description, menu options, links and the body of material should be obvious. Think of a web resource like the cover of a magazine – the reader will make up their mind within seconds if this resource is going to contain what they’re looking for or looks like a complete waste of time. If they’ve concluded the latter, then even if you actually have what they’re looking for, the effort was lost. Mistakes I’ve seen on web pages that totally turned me away: 1. Colours that do not compliment each other or do not contrast well. 2. Spelling mistakes. 3. Broken links. 4. Links are not obvious. 5. Missing tags (your page won’t turn up in a search) 6. Advertisements that are intrusive. 7. Hard to navigate.
