What are the basic features of a Type 1A container?
A Type 1A container is a triple packaging system consisting of: • (a) watertight primary receptacle(s); • a watertight secondary packaging; • absorbent material; and • an outer packaging. The assembled container must be capable of passing the tests set out in the CAN/CGSB-43.125 standard. These tests are based on those set out in chapter 6.3 of the UN Recommendations and include a drop test from 9 m, an impact test, and an internal pressure test. Details on each of these tests can be found in section 7 of the standard. For transport of substances that are refrigerated, frozen or in liquid nitrogen additional requirements are set out in section 4.2.2.1 of the standard.
