What are the basic differences between Planescape and the Forgotten Realms?
It’s really about location and ambience. The Outer Planes in the Forgotten Realms share some similarities with the Planescape setup (the more traditional Greyhawk ‘Great Wheel’.) But the two are connected. There are portals in many places in the Forgotten Realms to Sigil. But what it comes down to, really, is the ambience. Forgotten Realms has some big cities, nice little villages, ancient ruins, etc. Sigil is…. well, unique. The city is absolutely massive (40 miles long by 5 miles wide) on the inside curve of a massive ring floating at the top of an infinitely tall spire at the center of the Outlands (the neutral Outer Plane). Yes, that’s quite a mouthful. But everything is massive, weird and vaguely menacing in Sigil. Even the buildings. There are no trees or rocks or anything else in Sigil, so everything must be brought in through portals, so the buildings are made of anything they can find, and then torn down and the bits used again.
