What are the authorized nominating sources?
Title 10, U.S. Code, establishes two nomination categories. The first, usually referred to as “congressional nominations,” includes nominations made by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate and the Vice President of the United States : Nominations by Congressmen can only be made for residents of the Congressional District a Congressman represents. In the U.S. House of Representatives, I represent residents of South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District. In order to make an application through my office, you must be a resident of the 5th Congressional District of South Carolina. Nominations by U.S. Senators can only be made for residents of the state a Senator represents. In the U.S. Senate, South Carolina is represented by Senators Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint. Vice Presidential Nominations can be made by the Vice President of the United States as the President of the U.S. Senate. Nominations are made from the nation at large.
