What are the arguments for and against in vitro fertilization?
In favor of IVF . . . my 10 month old twins. Beautiful, amazing and a blessing. After struggling with infertility for years including 6 unsuccessful IUI cycles, we now have our family. There are many other people who have had the same experience – it is about having a child, having a family. I don’t have any actual arguments against. There are some drawbacks – many people do not have insurance coverage and must pay the huge cost out of pocket, it is stressful, the medications can be tough and have side effects. I disagree with the other posters about multiple births and IVF vs. IUI. IVF has much more control – you get to decide how many embryos to transfer back. We opted to transfer 2 accepting the risk for twins but being responsible enough to NOT transfer 3, 4 or more like the octomom. With ovulation stimulation and IUI, you are at a MUCH higher risk for high-order multiples (think Jon & Kate plus 8). With IVF, there are also moral arguments regarding what happens to any extra embryo
