What are the arguments against genetically modified foods?
The main argument against GM foods is that we just don’t know what harm they will do to the environment. Take all the cereals we now grow here in UK. All started life thousands of years ago like any other member of the grass family. Over the ages and by clever selection, our farmers produced wheat and other grains with bigger and better yields. What scientists are doing is interfering and trying to speed up a process which takes many generations and which has been found to be safe – natural selection. Take the case of the common vegetables which we eat here in UK. All of these started life as wild weeds which were edible but over the centuries we have selected the best seeds to grow the next year’s crop and thus have ended up with vegetables as big as your head. GM foods are banned here in UK and also right across the EU – we don’t want them. GM foods might destroy the Earth, turn the land infertile and worse. We have enough to worry about with Global Warming, so let’s not add GM foods
