Titanium dioxide TiO2 exists mainly in rutile and anatase crystallographic forms. Both of them have to be differentiated by their applications. Rutile is widely used for pigmentary applications (e.g. paintings) because of its high refractive index giving whiteness, while anatase (Photo above) is a useful material for photocatalytic applications.
