What are the applications of geometry in a students life?
This completely depends on what the student chooses to do with his or her life. It has MAJOR applications in construction (making sure that corners are square, surface area to buy the right amount of paint, sewer pipes have to drop so much per linear foot run — sounds like there’s even some trig that could be applied with the angles.) Other types of crafts also have obvious applications. However, if the student is not interested in any of these fields (though they might surprise themselves down the road and change careers), the best application is more abstract. You learn how to think and explain things in a logical sequential process. (Many professions, for example lawyers have great need of this skill.) Although if I wanted to get the students to buy into any of this, it would probably be more effective to have THEM WRITE ME an essay about the applications, than for ME to bore THEM with a lecture on the same topic.
