What are the anticipated social impacts associated with the proposed RCIP?
The physical components of this project will mostly be limited to the building of national backbones, rollout of rural networks, and of the landing stations. The risks associated with this kind of infrastructure are generally low, however, there may be minimal involuntary resettlement related to land acquisition for the construction of telecommunications and ancillary infrastructure, such as access roads. However, this potential impact is considered very unlikely, given that most of the proposed telecommunications facilities are expected to be constructed alongside other existing infrastructure, such as roads and power transmission lines. The project is not expected to impact indigenous peoples in any negative way. Once the actual locations of the facilities to be financed under the projects included in RCIP is known, the potential impacts will be re-assessed.
