What are the ALP classes like?
ALP is part of Ohio State University, and the classes operate on the same quarter system. Each course is 10 weeks long, with 20-23 hours of class each week. In addition to classes, students are expected to complete assignments at home and in the language and computer labs. ALP has five levels of instruction, each a full 10-week quarter, from elementary to advanced. Students do not have to complete all levels. Most students study in ALP for one, two, or three quarters before they reach the English proficiency they need. Some students skip levels if their classwork and test scores are especially good. A second quarter of study is available at each level, using different instructional materials, if necessary. What level will you start in? It really depends on how good your English is when you begin. New students take a placement test when they first arrive – and it is this test that determines the starting level.
