What are the aims of the Improvement Science programme?
A The Improvement Science programme is about the development of a field of inquiry and practice and about the development of its leadership for the future. A wide range of scientific inquiry is involved. Many disciplines contribute to the improvement sciences. Together they contribute to the development of a field of inquiry and practice that we might call “Improvement Science.” At its heart is the development of tools and concepts which advance knowledge and practice. A theory in science is a construction of logic that helps describe the situation we face, the world we live in. A model is much simpler—it describes some portion of what we face, including some elements and neglecting others. Models help us run experiments which can contribute to our theories. Theories contribute to our understanding of the significance of our findings in the experiments we conduct.
