What are the aims of teachers/staff who use Quality Circle Time?
Quality Circle Time builds the self-esteem of each participant and encourages pupils to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions. It therefore has impact in many areas of school life including: * Individual motivation and achievement * Enhancing positive relationships * Personal and social development * Producing calm behaviour and self-discipline Motivation and achievement A growing body of knowledge arising from the work of Peter Salovey, Howard Gardner and others brought together in Daniel Goleman’ s book ‘Emotional Intelligence’, points towards the importance of positive self-esteem in the learning process. This work confirms the findings of Burns (1982) which demonstrated that pupils who have taken part in programmes to raise their awareness of emotions and to enhance their self-esteem quite simply achieve higher scores on standardised achievement tests.
