What are the adverse effects of chloroquine?
• Chloroquine is generally well tolerated, with gastrointestinal adverse effects and headache being most commonly reported. Seizures are uncommon except in people with pre-existing epilepsy. People of African descent may get a sensation of itching. • Chloroquine has been reported as causing retinopathy, mainly in people taking higher doses of the drug for other conditions. At the doses prescribed for malaria chemoprophylaxis, retinopathy is very unlikely to occur. As a a precaution, annual eye checks are recommended for people taking chloroquine continually for more than 6 years.
