What are the advantages relative to each other of independent homeschooling, unschooling, and cyber schooling?
To me… the major joy and power of school at home is the freedom. Freedom to fit your (your child’s) education to your (your child’s) needs and talents and freedom to work on your own schedule. So to me that is where the strengths and weaknesses of each of the types of schooling you mention come from. Unschooling is a fabulous idea… and would likely be the perfect education for anyone if we could all get down to business and make it work. The big ‘disadvantages’/reasons so many of us *don’t* really unschool are (1) we have been ‘preprogramed’ by our own education to expect textbooks and structure like public school has… so we fear ‘leaving out’ something and feel like we are ‘doing it wrong’ when we unschool and (2) unschooling takes a lot of time and thought to really do ‘right’… otherwise it *is* easy to become unmotivated to advance at all because ‘doing nothing’ is easy… and ‘doing nothing’ is *not* unschooling.
