What are the advantages of web-based databases?
How a statewide database is connected to users can have a significant impact on the value of a database for enforcement of orders. Many statewide or local databases are accessible only through a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN). Although most courts will need to maintain a LAN to provide information over the Internet, implementing a web-based database has several advantages over using only a LAN or WAN. An Internet connection increases access because users do not need to be connected through the LAN or WAN. This broader access increases security risks, but these risks can be addressed by using digital certificates, passwords, firewalls and other data security measures. The Internet can be less expensive than a LAN or WAN, but it also can be slower because connections speeds vary.
