Unlike filing electronically through the U.S. Customs interface, eDecs is not limited to commercial imports. Your declaration is submitted electronically to the appropriate port before import or export, so remote filing may be possible. Since eDecs creates an account and stores data, it will ease the data entry burden associated with filling out Form 3-177. You will be able to track the status of your submission and communicate with the inspector through the system’s e-mail notification features. If an error is found in your declaration, the inspector can notify you and help you correct the declaration on-line if necessary.
