What are the advantages of the thin-walled, razor-sharp threads on the BICON-PLUS® titanium shell?
Firstly, no thread needs to be pre-cut in the bone, nor is excessive force required to screw in the cup. Thick-walled screw threads would entail additional bone loss. A poorly-cutting screw thread risks creating pressure atrophy of the bone. A BICON-PLUS® cup shell that has been inserted at the incorrect angle can be removed without loss of stability and re-inserted in the correct axial alignment. From a bio-mechanical standpoint the advantage of thin-walled threads is that they are able to move along with the vibrations in the elastic pelvis, with better distribution of the loads that arise, whilst minimising stress peaks at specific points.
