RealSNP offers immediate access to assay information deriving from Sequenom’s efforts to validate large numbers of candidate SNPs. It’s known that a large fraction of putative SNPs currently in the public domain are not ultimately confirmed as polymorphic when assays designed to interrogate those SNPs are actually tested in a large sampling of DNAs. Sequenom’s experience is that only 60-70% or less of submitted SNPs are truly polymorphic, depending on the source. The remainder are apparently due to sequencing errors, or to faulty SNP prediction programs.
