What are the advantages of Pre-Arranging a funeral ?
For some families, pre-arranging a funeral is done out of necessity to satisfy a Medicaid/SSI requirement. In those situations, an “irrevocable” trust is established as part of a “spend-down” of the Medicaid recipient’s assets. Monies in an irrevocable trust must be accounted for by law and in the event there is money left over at the time of death, those funds must be returned to the County. Other families may opt to pre-arrange a funeral simply for peace of mind. The satisfaction of knowing your wishes are recorded and/or funds are already set aside for your funeral, often provides comfort to the entire family. In these cases, a “revocable” trust is established. In the event there is money left over at the time of death, those funds will be returned to the family.
