What are the advantages of nitrogen gas filling of car tyres?
There is no real advantage that would justify filling a car tyre with nitrogen unless that car is a land speed contender or is being driven at over 25,000′ ASL. Nitrogen does not expand when heated. BIG DEAL; with only 24-32 PSI a car tyre will never get hot enough for plain air to blow it off the rim unless that car is on fire. Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules. SO WHAT. The air that goes into your tyres is 80% nitrogen anyway. Even if it leaks through your tyre (highly unlikely) it still won’t be enough to make the tyre dangerous. Nitrogen does not deteriorate rubber. HOO RAH. By the time oxygen does enough damage to the rubber ten or more years have passed and it’s time for new tyres anyway. Nitrogen contains no water vapour. TRUE. But straight air has very little water vapour and the mold release residue on the inside of a tire is waterproof. Again; by the time water vapour does any damage it’s time for new tyres anyway. So unless the tyre shop is putting nitrogen
