What are the advantages of including sodium hyaluronate in your eye drop?
Sodium hyaluronate is highly effective in relieving the symptoms associated with sensations of dryness because it increases tear film break-up time and so makes the eye drop very comfortable in the eye. Further, it coats the cornea very effectively and adheres well to the mucin layer of the tear film (mucin is a protein which is a major component of tears). The physical properties of sodium hyaluronate are similar to those of natural tears and it can entrap water so prolonging the beneficial effects of the eye drop.
