What Are the Advantages of Genetic Engineering?
“Genetic engineering really lets us see the future in a way. Say, you want to study a condition in humans and to study the condition in a human over a lifetime, you would have to watch that person for 90 years. But if we put the same condition into a bacterial cell which, you know, will multiply a hundred times in a, you know, in a short period of time and will live it’s life all within a few hours, it really helps to speed up and see how nature works faster, you know. And it’s also a way for us to make things that we want, an example would be, say, we find a molecule within a, within a frog which can cure hangovers. Well, then we sequence that molecule, we figure out what the code is to make that molecule and we genetically engineer it into some smaller cells on bacteria or maybe even a cow, and now that molecule will come out every time you milk the cow, or every time the bacteria multiply.
