What are the advantages of fiber optic AV systems in medical applications?
Medical systems need to isolate electrical equipment from the patient for safety, often have tight spaces to run cables, and need to limit the effect of electrical interference on other sensitive medical instruments. Since video displays often use high voltages, they must be isolated from the medical imaging equipment. The displays are also often mounted on booms so they can be adjusted for optimal viewing by the surgeon and other medical staff. Since fiber optic cables are made of glass, they isolate the medical imaging device from the display, are small enough to fit inside the boom, and emit no electrical signals that could affect other equipment.
