There are often explosive or flammable vapors or gases in hazardous environments. If a copper wire breaks in this type of environment, and is carrying an electrical signal, there is usually a spark that can ignite the explosive vapors. Since fiber optic cables carry light, they do not spark if they are broken. Fiber optic cable therefore is often used in a hazardous environment.
