What are the advantages DVD has over VHS?
In very basic terms: DVDs provide better picture and sound quality than VHS. In terms of picture quality DVD video is on a par with broadcast TV (and is actually better quality than most digital TV channels.) In terms of sound, VHS is only capable of Dolby Surround (4 channels) Hi-Fi audio. DVD is capable of full Dolby Digital/DTS sound (5.1 channels). In addition, on VHS consumers have to choose whether they want the original widescreen version of a film or the 4:3 standard version. On DVD consumers buy one disc and then decide how they want their player to display the image. More content can be delivered in a much smaller package. The non-linear nature of DVDs means that “special features” such as interviews and commentaries can be added to feature films.
