Hydrogen, another potential source, has advantages and drawbacks. Pro: Environmentally Friendly The hydrogen engine transforms hydrogen and water into electrical power without releasing harmful gasses or pollutants into the environment. Pro: Abundant Supply In addition to being a main component of water, hydrogen can also be extracted from natural gas. The process is easier than water extraction, but is limited because gas is a non-renewable resource. Con: Expense Construction of hydrogen fuel cells requires platinum, a metal that’s difficult to find and obtain. Maintenance of hydrogen vehicles would be costly since the fuel cells are expensive to repair or replace. Con: Danger Hydrogen is a highly volatile, flammable material.
