What are the advantages/disadvantages of egg donation?
Egg donation, as an alternative to adoption, oftentimes allows one prospective parent to experience pregnancy, childbirth and have control over the level of prenatal care. At the same time, it allows the other prospective parent to maintain a genetic connection to the child. In many cases, prospective parents are able to choose a donor with similar characteristics to themselves, although there is no guarantee that a child born from egg donation will also exhibit these characteristics. Another benefit egg donation provides is the chance that several extra embryos can be created and frozen for future use. Some of the disadvantages of egg donation include the impossibility to guarantee the genetic makeup of a donor, reliability of a donor, the number/quality of eggs retrieved, if the eggs will fertilize or if a pregnancy will result.
