What are the advantages &disadvantages of distribution transformers?
Basically without distribution transformers the power companies would have a lot of trouble distributing electrical power. There would have to be huge bus bars (perhaps a foot square in cross section) running down the streets, either underground or elevated, to carry the hundreds of thousands of amps required. Which would require a lot of copper or aluminum. And make expansion very difficult. Net result, we would pay a lot more for electricity, to cover this expensive infrastructure. Down side, you see the transformers on the poles, not really too big a deal, and less obtrusive than the huge bus bars would be.
