What are the advantages and disadvantages of there being more men than woman or the other way round?
Advantages and Disadvantages are a subjective property and it depends on whether you’re talking about an advantage to the species, or to the males of the species specifically or to the females of the species, or to evolution and natural selection. But here’s my two penneth…. More males than females Disadvantages: Lots of males would not be able to mate – loss of genetic material. Advantages: Females would become choosier about whom they mate with due to the abundance of potential mates. Only the cream of the breed would be able to pass their DNA onto their progeny. More females than males: disadvantages: natural selection would be slower in a population of reptiles since they do not “mate for life” – males would simply mate to their hearts content, leaving little room for natural selection and evolution. advantages: everybody gets some!
