advantages: excellent defense, often built on higher land (a hill or cliff – called a ‘motte and bailey castle’) , almost always have a moat filled with water with a retractable bridge, every tower is often inhabited by a knight hired for your protection, large walls for more protection, the space within the walls often used as a training grounds or a marketplace or rarely, homes of villagers.
