It all depends on whether you are a lumper or a splitter. The major oceans are Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. You could with some justification say however that there are 7 seas: North Atlantic, Arctic, South Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Mediterranean, and Black Sea. On the other hand there are a lot more than that if you think about it. There is the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Sargasso Sea, Caribbean Sea, North Sea, South China Sea, Bering Sea, Kamchatka Sea, Tyrhennian Sea, Caspian Sea, Salton Sea, Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, Aral Sea (The last five really just salt lakes).
