What are the 5 Freedoms?
The RSPCA is well known nationallyand it’s mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. A key foundation of the RSPCA’s philosophy is the belief that man must treat animals humanely. There are basic principles that should guide our actions where we have guardianship, or other influence, over the welfare of an animal. The welfare of an animal includes its physical and mental state. Good animal welfare implies both good health and a sense of wellbeing. The RSPCA Five Freedoms for Animals are: • Freedom from hunger and thirst – by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour • Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area • Freedom from pain, injury or disease -by prevention through rapid diagnosis and treatment • Freedom to express normal behaviour – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animals own kind • F
