She did not have other children to play with or other adults to interact with. Sylvia has a great respect and love for animals and nature. She had a deep connection with the environment. Once the hunter comes into town, this causes Sylvia to have conflicting emotions because she gets along well with the hunter and now has someone she can talk to. When he asks her to let him know if she sees the white heron, Sylvia is further conflicted. Ultimately, she decides to not reveal to him that she saw the white heron.
