What Are Swarming Termites?
Every spring, typically around April or May, the reproductive colony members of subterranean termites, also known as “alates”, will begin emerging from underground colonies and often from within residential dwellings where they typically reside all year long in an effort to mate and begin new colonies. Swarming termites often create confusion for homeowners experiencing activity in and around their home or property. This is because many have never experienced the natural phenomenon of swarming termites and misunderstand what they are watching as well as often mistake them for other flying insects. A swarmers’ mission is to reproduce and if a male finds a female that matches up they will pair off and begin a new colony. They emerge by the thousands and while swarming termites are not the ones that create wood damage they are a possible indication of a larger, already existing infestation and should be addressed immediately.
