What are Subterranean Termites?
They are social insects that normally live in the ground. They eat wood and other cellulose material. Their colonies consist of workers who eat and digest the wood and feed the other members of the colony. The colonies also have soldiers, kings, and queens. These colony members cannot feed themselves and are entirely dependent on the workers for their survival. The workers randomly and continuously search for food, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to meet the demands of the colony. It is not known what guides termites to a food source such as the wood in your home. They have been shown to tunnel right by wood missing it by 2 millimeters. They are blind insect. However, as soon as they locate a food source, they mark it with a chemical marker known as a pheromone. This allows other members of the colony to find the food source.
