What are stormwater management facilities?
Stormwater management facilities are vegetative and/or structural facilities built to manage stormwater runoff on site to minimize the impacts on the sewer system and surface waters. Some facilities are designed to maximize infiltration to replenish ground water where feasible and to increase base flows in streams and rivers. Others detain the stormwater on site and release it in a controlled manner to minimize flow rates. Stormwater management facilities can also capture pollutants picked up and carried by stormwater runoff. Often, facilities are used in combination to control volume and remove pollutants from stormwater onsite, before it reaches its disposal point. Disposal points include discharge into the ground, surface infiltration, private outfalls to surface waters, or connection to the City’s storm or combined sewer system.
