What are Steroids?
Steroids are prescribed for brain tumor patients to reduce swelling within the skull, called edema. Swelling may occur after surgery or as a response by the body to the tumor. Swelling can harm the brain and lead to an increase in symptoms, so it is important that edema be treated. The most commonly prescribed steroid for brain tumors is a drug called Decadron (dexamethasone). Decadron can have several side effects that are important for patients to understand. Because it can suppress the body’s immune response, Decadron can make patients more susceptible to infections and illnesses. Decadron is a corticosteroid, which is not the type of steroid that is used to build muscle. Although it can cause fluid retention and weight gain, it can also cause loss of muscle and some strength. Decadron can also cause bones to weaken. Additionally, Decadron can affect mood. These affects can be helped by certain psychiatric drugs. Usually mood problems clear up after you stop taking the drug.
