What are states doing to minimize the level of judicial stress?
Proposals from various states to alleviate judicial stress include allowing judges to take judicial sabbaticals, having judges engage in job sharing to encourage collegiality, and insisting that courts hire well-trained support staff. Some states, such as North Dakota, have offered daylong training on managing judicial stress, inviting psychologists and other experts to speak on the subject, while other states provide judicial stress management guides. The American Judges Association hosted a conference on “Vicarious Trauma, Stress and Burnout in Judges.” The Judicial Family Institute provides resources to judges and their families, as well.
