What are standard scores (SS), and how do they relate to a childs IQ score?
Standard scores are normally provided to indicate the level of competency on achievement tests. A standard score should be compared with a child’s IQ to determine if the level of achievement is commensurate with the child’s ability-the IQ score. Achievement scores or standard scores should be in a 7 point range, positive or negative, of the child’s IQ to affirm that his or her achievement is on level with the ability. Parents should insist that they be given the standard score and not just a statement that tells you “average range” of achievement. The average range is anywhere between 85 and 115, much more than the permissible 6 or 7 variance points.
