What are specific reasons for cutting each sport?

The freshman programs were suggested because our criteria have been to eliminate sub-varsity programs prior to varsity level. These cuts would directly impact a smaller athletic population while freeing space for JV and Varsity programs. Important also was the opportunity for freshman to play on either the JV teams or the Recreation League programs which would include a new traveling team program. Field Hockey was chosen due to the lower numbers over the past six years, the lack of a facility to practice/play, and the other opportunities to play another sport in the fall. Boys’ ice hockey is our 2nd most expensive program with costs continuing to increase. It annually has a low number of participants in the entire program (24). Further, it does not compete at the CAL level of competition. Wrestling struggles each year to maintain the number of participants (26). Heavy recruiting occurs which contributes to the problem of students (7 this year) dropping the sport after the season begins
