What are some ways to collect baseline data for students identified as gifted?

Some possible ways to collect baseline data that would be appropriate for students who are gifted might include such things as 6-trait writing rubric, self-made rubrics to judge higher order thinking skills or evidence of creativity, curriculum based measures created from higher grade level materials, district criterion referenced tests from higher grade levels (if available and able to be given frequently), rubrics created to judge the quality of research and other products. NRTs, State Assessments and grades are all things that might be used to show a student’s potential for high academic achievement (i.e. giftedness) but really don’t describe the student’s needs. Try to think of things that will help you understand to what degree the student’s giftedness is impacting the student’s access and progress in the regular education curriculum. If we really want to understand where the student is functioning within our curriculum we must have some curriculum based measures.
