What are some ways teachers teach children with autism spectrum disorders vocabulary?

I’ve worked with many different types of children and teens with Autism spectrum disorder. The most effective way they learn vocabulary is visually and auditory. Children and teens with autism need routines and a predictable schedule. When working with people with autism it’s helpful to tell them what they will be doing, show them a picture, and repeat what they will be doing. This will work with individual vocabulary words too. It needs to be repetitive and done on a daily basis. Another step in teaching vocabulary/learning to read is looking at the word and repeating it. Students can eventually learn sentences through this strategy. When showing the student the word, it’s helpful to point and then have the student point. When they are reading a sentence they should practice pointing at each word they say. Patience is very important when working with anyone with autism. They will learn through repetition and practice. It will take time, but you will get there!
