What are some vocal warm ups apart from shhh, humming, lips trills, and scales?
If you have difficulty with diction, sing your scales warm-ups with tongue-twisters, or something similar. My current director is fond of this technique, and it works well for getting clear-sounding words when you stretch to the limits of your vocal register. Among his favorites: red leather, yellow leather wide, white wrist watches There’s also a warm-up song we use, “If We Want to Be Ready to Sing,” that’s good for diction, syncopated rhythms, and developing vocal technique. The rough text of it is: “If we want to be ready to sing, we must prepare the air, so we can sing our song all day long.” Each time that it’s repeated, an additional phrase is added following “prepare the air.” Suggested expansions are “support the sound,” “let the vowels be round,” keep the consonants clean,” and “let our expressions be seen.” However, it’s not the words you use that matter so much as the rhythms and emphasis.
