I don’t think Charles Dickens is considered to be a realist. Great Expectations doesn’t have a happy ending but I think it’s too romantic and dramatic (doomed tragic love, crazy Miss Havisham, etc.) to be categorized as realism. Middlemarch by George Eliot, on the other hand, is probably one of the best examples of realism.
