try Carl Sandburg – (he wrote about Chicago) James Thurber Mark Twain – he wrote about life on the Mississippi River his books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are classics they predate the Civil War Gone With the Wind – this book covers just before the start of the Civil War, the war itself and the aftermath. Patricia Beatty wrote several books about life just before the turn of the century in the West The Outsiders is about a group of boys that go through hard times this is probably set in the 1950 -60 range. Marty Robbins – sang songs about the Southwest Johnny Norton sang about Alaska and the Gold Rush Johnny Cash sang about the South Loretta Lynn sang about life in the hills Jeannie C. Riley sang about life in the community and some of the goings on thereof. check out Country and Western singers – they usually do sing about stuff that went on and in some cases is still going on today – hope this helps a little.
